For those of you who aren’t familiar with the Atlas, that’s not surprising because this is Volkswagen’s brand new full size crossover that was only recently announced. It’s a larger, seven-passenger crossover that was designed and built intentionally for the modern American family. As for the Tiguan, it has undergone significant changes for the upcoming year. It not only is more refined than before, but it also has grown quite in a bit in size and because of its longer wheelbase, now offers three rows of seating.
Space shouldn’t be a concern...it should be configured! The all-new Atlas and redesigned Tiguan both do an exceptional job of not only creating more than enough space for passengers and cargo, but also make it flexible enough to configured in a number of ways. Seats can be split 40/20/40 while the second row can slide forward and out of the way so that entering and exiting the vehicle isn’t an awkward hassle.
As far as size goes, if you’re looking for a large crossover and frequently will be filling all of the seats or need a vast amount of cargo space, the Atlas is going to be the better bet. It’s quite a bit larger than the Tiguan and is specifically intended for those who are constantly on the go and need something full size. With the second and third rows of seating folded down, the Atlas is able to create 96.8 cu-ft.
For 2018 the Tiguan takes on an updated version of Volkswagen’s 2.0L turbocharged engine. Capable of 184 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque, the Tiguan is able to out tow any compact SUV and a majority of midsize ones too. Towing capacity has not yet been announced for the Atlas, but considering that it shares the same 4-cylinder engine as the Tiguan and offers a V6 option as well, it too will be able to offer an impressive tow rating.
